Paul Robertson : Phenotype Genotype (PhG)

Paul Robertson introduces work from Summerhall’s ‘salon style’ Phenotype Genotype (PhG) gallery. PhG maintains a changing collection in curious juxtaposition of examples from Arte Povera to the Zero Group. ‘Phenotype’ is the physical manifestation of an organism (here, a work of art) while ‘genotype’ is the genetic mechanism underlying the creation of those surface traits. In this metaphor the ‘genetic mechanism’ at play is the dynamic intellectual motives and theories of aesthetics which have excited artists sufficiently to paint, sculpt or even just write. Representing a small part of Heart Fine Art’s collection PhG is regularly refreshed as one of Summerhall’s permanent displays.
