This first Edinburgh performance of ‘Carmen Funebre’ was staged in the playground of Drummond Community High School. It is a short extract from the Capital News collaboration between Edinburgh students and Scotsman newspapers in 1996. This year Teatr Biuro Podróży (Poland) will be staging a charity performance of ‘Carmen Funebre’ on 14th August at Old College Quad.
‘Carmen Funebre: Fringe First and Critics’ Award-winning performance. ‘An unforgettable dramatisation of war’ (Observer). ‘Terrifying and highly recommended’ (Guardian). ‘A contemporary performance created with theatrical skill and the sensitivity of an open nerve, a poetic piece devoid of euphemism’ (Espectador). Created in 1994, Carmen Funebre was inspired by the war in ex-Yugoslavia, and other ethnic conflicts, as well as world-wide outbreaks of nationalism and intolerance. It describes war from the victims’ point of view and shows the universal images of the condition of displaced people. It has been presented in 50 countries all over the world.’
